Choose the type of antique bed to suit you
Furniture makers follow the fashion at the time and therefore antique beds change in style according to the era in which they were made. The choice of bed is very much down to personal choice and the look that you are aiming to achieve within your home.
Some of the most popular types of antique bed include:
Antique Brass Beds
Brass beds appeared in the UK in the early 1800 and were well loved by the Victorians. The design of brass beds hasn’t changed a great deal since then, with curves, scrolls and florals decorating the frame, particularly at the headboard and footboard. Antique Victorian beds are relatively easy to come across and reasonably priced. There are also Edwardian brass beds, which are recognisable by having softer, more elegant lines and a feminine shape.
Antique French Beds
There are a number of types of French antique beds that often come up for sale. The most expensive and elaborate example is the boat-style ‘Lit-en-bateau’ which was made in the 19th century. The most ornate versions of this style can reach £10,000 or more, but there are much more reasonably priced versions which usually plainer in style. Antique French beds made in the Louis XV and XVI style are relatively attainable, especially ones made by furniture makers such as Francois Linke. If you’re looking for a feminine design, 18th century rococo French antique beds bring a beautiful elegance to a bedroom.
Antique Four Poster Beds and Antique Canopy Beds
Canopy beds have been in the China since as early as the 4th century and were introduced to the UK in the 13th century. They provided the ability to completely enclose a bed, either for warmth or privacy, as most noble families slept in the same room as their servants. These beds were originally very plain and understated but became more ornate over the years. During the Renaissance, headboards and posts were carved and the canopy fabric was commonly velvet or heavy brocade. It was common for the canopy to cost more than the wooden bed frame.
Concerns over hygiene lead to bedrooms being furnished more simply during the 1800s and canopy beds became unpopular. However, they received a revival by the end of the century and had a popularity that lasted to the 1940s.
Four poster beds were introduced into the UK in the 15th century and quickly became a status symbol. Many early versions are extremely ornate, made from oak and of a size that far exceeds the modern super king size. Antique four poster beds can be a beautiful addition to a bedroom, adding height and a dramatic effect.
